उत्तर रामायण के अनुसार अश्वमेघ यज्ञ पूर्ण होने के पश्चात भगवान श्रीराम ने बड़ी सभा का आयोजन कर सभी देवताओं, ऋषि-मुनियों, किन्नरों, यक्षों व राजाओं आदि को उसमें आमंत्रित किया। सभा में आए नारद मुनि के भड़काने पर एक राजन ने भरी सभा में ऋषि विश्वामित्र को छोड़कर सभी को प्रणाम किया। ऋषि विश्वामित्र गुस्से से भर उठे और उन्होंने भगवान श्रीराम से कहा कि अगर सूर्यास्त से पूर्व श्रीराम ने उस राजा को मृत्यु दंड नहीं दिया तो वो राम को श्राप दे देंगे।  इस पर श्रीराम ने उस राजा को सूर्यास्त से पूर्व मारने का प्रण ले लिया। श्रीराम के प्रण की खबर पाते ही राजा भागा-भागा हनुमान जी की माता अंजनी की शरण में गया तथा बिना पूरी बात बताए उनसे प्राण रक्षा का वचन मांग लिया। तब माता अंजनी ने हनुमान जी को राजन की प्राण रक्षा का आदेश दिया। हनुमान जी ने श्रीराम की शपथ लेकर कहा कि कोई भी राजन का बाल भी बांका नहीं कर पाएगा परंतु जब राजन ने बताया कि भगवान श्रीराम ने ही उसका वध करने का प्रण किया है तो हनुमान जी धर्म संकट में पड़ गए कि राजन के प्राण कैसे बचाएं और माता का दिया वचन कैसे पूरा करें तथा भगवान श्रीराम
